The establishment of the Secretariat is truly a milestone in the history of ASEAN-ROK Forest Cooperation.
The Secretariat will make efforts to establish a strong framework to ensure effective implementation of the mission and objectives under the Agreement in line with the decisions of the Governing Council.

Asian Forest Cooperation Organization, or AFoCO in short, is realizing through a long but firm journey, beginning with the Agreement on ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Forest Cooperation which entered into force on 5 August 2012. The Secretariat, being one of the institutional bodies under the Agreement, was established on 1 September 2012 in Seoul, ROK. These dates represent milestones in the history of forest cooperation between ASEAN and ROK as well as towards the establishment of historic AFoCO for the greener Asia.

Four years of partnership between the ASEAN Member States and ROK from August 2012 to August 2016 has made notable achievement and progress through a wide range of forestry activities.

Two regional projects were completed and five regional projects are still ongoing, for which the Secretariat is providing necessary operational guidance. In an attempt to address regional forestry issues through a more coordinated approach, a Landmark Program was launched since 2014, focusing on capacity building of the ASEAN Member States as well as forest rehabilitation projects in some less developing countries. These regional projects and cooperation activities under the Landmark Program have significantly contributed to fulfill the needs of the countries mainly through field oriented actions.

The Secretariat is committed to the vision of strengthening regional forest cooperation by undertaking proven technology and translating policy into concrete actions for a greener Asia. It will continue to serve for continuity of the ongoing activities as well as to ensure effective transition towards the establishment of AFoCO at this very important juncture.
