Forest of Viet Nam

Viet Nam has an area of 310,070㎢ and a population of 93.4 million people. The total forest area reported is 140,850㎢, covering 45 percent of total land area. This is the result of intensive rehabilitation and plantation programs, which reclaimed 3.7 million hectares over 15 years between 1990 and 2005.

Although the forest cover in Viet Nam increased rapidly with the establishment of plantation forest in recent years, 200,230 ha of the forest and forest land areas are still categorized as non-planned areas for forestry planning which are the potential to increase the areas of forest land. Forest stock of Viet Nam is not yet very high. Viet Nam’s timber stock per capita is 9.8 ㎥/person while the world average is 75 ㎥/person.

With regards to plant diversity, being a venue of plant species originating from three flora areas: the Himalaya-Yunnam-Guizhou flora in the North-West, the India-Myanmar flora in the West, and the Malaysia-Indonesia in the South and South-East, Viet Nam possesses a very abundant and diverse flora, of which around 30 percent of its total species are endemic. There are 11,217 species of mammals, 889 species of birds, 2,470 species of fishes, more than 300 species of corals and 310 species of mollusks. The flora estimated is of the order of 12,000 species of plants.
