Forest of Malaysia

Malaysia has retained one of the highest percentages of forest cover among the ASEAN Member States. Of the 328,550㎢ and land area, 202,824㎢ of forests cover 61 percent of the country.

Malaysia’s 306 species of mammals, 742 species of birds, 567 species of reptile, 242 species of amphibians, about 450 species of freshwater fish and more than 150,000 species of invertebrates live in the country’s rich forests. Its flora is estimated around 15,000 species of plants.

Timber export is one of Malaysia’s biggest exports to U.S., Japan, and the E.U. In an effort to both comply with the demand of the consumer market and the sustainable management of environment, Malaysia has focused on encouraging the legality, certification, and chain-of-custody issues of timber products. Illegal logging is also a major problem in Malaysia being a universal issue of most of the ASEAN Member States.
